Litvak Days 2022

On Thursday, Tony and Eve Swabe, together with Jeremy Havardi, attended the 11th Litvak Days in London, a celebration of Jewish life and architecture in interwar Kaunas, hosted at JW3. Kaunas, which was named as European Capital of culture 2022 and whose architecture is listed on the UNESCO World Heritage site, had a flourishing Jewish presence in the 1920s and 1930s, with two Hebrew high schools, five Yiddish daily newspapers, theatres with Yiddish plays and Jewish welfare institutions. After opening remarks by H. E. Eitvydas Bajarūnas, Ambassador of Lithuania to the United Kingdom, a panel discussed the rich legacy of Jewish life as well as the White City of Tel Aviv, a prime example of Bauhaus architecture. Following this, a distinguished ensemble played a number of pieces of modernist and experimental music.
