BBUK statement on the Golders Green attack

B'nai B'rith UK is appalled by the latest act of violence perpetrated against the Jewish community in London. The two Jewish men who were stabbed in Golders Green this morning, one in his 70s and another in his 30s, are in stable condition in hospital and we wish them a speedy recovery. We also salute the bravery of those who responded so quickly and prevented a greater act of violence. While we welcome the decision of the police to declare this a terrorist incident and of the Prime Minister to convene Cobra, we know that words alone are insufficient. The repeated attacks on the Jewish community are now a national emergency which requires a fully co-ordinated response from the police, intelligence services and the government. Given that an Iran linked group has now claimed responsibility for the attack, it is high time that the UK took some meaningful actions. It is essential to immediately proscribe the IRGC, shut down media stations that disseminate Iranian propaganda and investigate all those charities, schools and organisations that cover for the regime. There must be zero tolerance for antisemitism and antizionism and for all those who use political slogans to hide their malign intent. These attacks are fundamentally an affront to British values and to all those who cherish tolerance and decency. Thus, unless this threat is dealt with, it is not just the Jewish community that will suffer but the UK as a whole.

On Tuesday, author and journalist Daniel Ben-Ami gave a talk to members and friends of B'nai B'rith UK about what drove Jewish antizionists. He spoke about the true meaning of both Zionism and antizionism, described the groups that opposed Jewish statehood and then focused on why some Jewish activists chose to identify with this militant ideology. His talk was illustrated with examples of prominent antizionists from within the Jewish left.

B’nai B’rith UK is shocked and appalled by the arson attack on four Hatzola ambulances in Golders Green last night. Hatzola serves an essential role in our community, saving life and tending to the injured, and such an attack is both cowardly and reprehensible. The incident is rightly being treated as an antisemitic hate crime and we hope that the police bring the perpetrators to justice. It is equally a horrific assault on core British values and freedoms. As Jews face an unprecedented surge in antisemitism, this attack illustrates once again the need for security and vigilance within the Jewish community. We thank the police and the CST for their efforts at this time and will continue to work with them to keep our community safe.

BBUK statement on the war in the Middle East

B’nai B’rith UK has been closely following the escalation of hostilities in the Middle East this weekend. We will shed no tears for Iran’s leader, Ali Khamenei, a man who served as the figurehead of an evil regime which has brutally repressed its own population and exported terror around the world. It is clear that the latest outbreak of war with Iran is inevitable, given the regime’s failure to accept the elimination of its nuclear weapons program and ballistic missiles. The Islamic Republic remains a major threat to the stability and security of the Middle East, as well as the UK, while it continues to seek Israel’s elimination. It has also committed unspeakable crimes against its own people, not just since the start of this year but for several decades. The people of Iran deserve a better future, free from tyranny and oppression, and we continue to stand in solidarity with them. Our thoughts are also with the people of Israel who are being forced into underground shelters because of Iranian attacks. We all look forward to a future in which the Israeli and Iranian peoples can stand together as friends and allies once again.

Letter of Appreciation from B'nai B'rith Kyiv

B'nai B'rith in action

We have all read about the Russian bombardment of the electrical power generation infrastructure in Ukraine.

Just a few weeks ago Alan Silman, BBUK Ukraine Officer, received a plea from Svetlana Levitas, our contact in Kyiv, asking BBUK to help them buy a generator.

That evening, at the BB Cheshire AGM, he announced that we would be hoping to respond positively to their plea.

The Lodge instantly resolved to take up this challenge, circuated all members and within 24 hours over £1,000.00 was raised.

Since then, much more has actually been raised and the monies transferred last week to where it is urgently needed.

Pleasesee below the letter of appreciation below which has been sent by the BB Kyiv Lodge to Anna Hassan, Chairperson of B'nai B'rith Cheshire Lodge.

This is an example of how BBUK can act effectively and with great speed.

We already pre-ordered it and as soon as it arrives we will send you the picture. Your kindness and generosity have a huge impact on life of the clients in our care during this incredibly difficult war time.

It is still very cold and snowy in Ukraine. Now , elderly people in Kyiv are living in conditions that are almost impossible to endure. Because of the war, many of them spend most of their days without electricity, often without water and heating. Constant power outages, cold homes, and empty taps turn every ordinary day into a struggle for survival. For older people in our project , whose health is already fragile, these conditions are especially cruel. It means being unable to cook a warm meal, to keep themselves from freezing, to charge a phone. Losing connection with the world is the biggest fear as they confess to project coordinator Iryna Levitas.

You may have seen in the news that elderly people in Ukraine are freezing to death in their own homes. Tragically, this is not an exaggeration—it is our painful reality. The war continues, our infrastructure is constantly damaged (the most recent attack happened last night in Kyiv, the ballistic missiles involved) , and recovery takes enormous time and resources. People literally fall asleep not knowing if tomorrow there will be light, warmth, or water. This constant anxiety and exhaustion slowly wears everybody down.

In these harsh conditions, the generator you helped to provide means far more than equipment. Thanks to you, our project coordinator Iryna Levitas , accountant Susanna , and doctor Alexandra can continue their work for giving medicine and stay in touch with the clients , and our clients can charge their phones or their small personal medical equipment (if needed) and also they stay connected with their families, feel less alone, and feel protected. This generator you help to buy brings back a small but precious piece of normal life.

Because of the support of our Bnai Brith Brothers and Sisters from the UK , elderly people in our project for many years have been able to live with dignity, even when everything around them seems to be falling apart. We are deeply thankful to you for your open heart, for your trust, and for the many years you have stood beside those who need help the most. Your generosity gives people not only warmth and light, but also faith in kindness when uncertainty is everywhere .

"Hezbollah Global Inc." Talk by Dr Emanuele Ottolenghi

Last night, Dr. Emanuele Ottolenghi, a former Senior Fellow at the Foundation for Defence of Democracies, spoke to members and supporters of B'nai B'rith UK on 'Hezbollah Global Inc, How terrorism and organised crime converge.' He explained how Hezbollah raised a large part of its budget from joint ventures with transnational criminal organisations, with activities including drug trafficking, money laundering and illegal logging. He showed how clerics and community leaders socialised and recruited members of the diaspora and then funnelled funds back into the organisation. Through his detailed and engaging presentation, he stressed the threat posed to the West by both terrorism and criminal networks.

BBUK statement on the return of the last remaining hostage

B'nai B'rith welcomes the return of Ran Gvili's body to Israel, fulfilling Israel's sacred mission to bring home all hostages from Gaza. Such news brings mixed emotions, given that Ran never had the chance to be reunited with his family in life, but we are thankful that he has been laid to rest. We are reminded of the immense sacrifices Israel makes to safeguard its citizens and the heavy price it must pay for peace. World leaders must now insist on the next phases of the plan for Gaza. They must demand the disarming of Hamas and the deradicalisation of Palestinian society, allowing new leadership to emerge that can genuinely build a better future for the inhabitants of that shattered enclave. We look forward to advocating a new pathway for Israelis and Palestinians that can bring both peoples peace, justice and prosperity.

BBUK statement on Iran

B'nai B'rith UK salutes the courage and defiance shown by millions of brave Iranians as they take to the streets against their government. It is now clear that the demonstrations and protests are taking place in hundreds of cities across all of Iran's provinces as ordinary people vent their fury at an oppressive and tyrannical regime. They oppose Iran's economic mismanagement and corruption but also its strategy of spreading terror throughout the Middle East in the service of a hateful ideology. So many of these people want better relations with the West, especially with Israel, and lament their country's isolation on the international stage. But right now, they face a draconian crackdown that has reportedly claimed dozens of lives, though the true figure may not be known due to censorship. We call on all western governments to show solidarity with these brave Iranian citizens and condemn their government's murderous response. We call on the UK government to proscribe the IRGC and sanction all other state entities that spread terror. We look forward to the day when Iranians can express themselves as a free nation and co-operate with their neighbours in a new era of regional peace and prosperity.

BBUK response to Metropolitan and Manchester police statements

B’nai B’rith UK welcomes the joint statement issued by the Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police and the Chief Constable of Greater Manchester Police, which states that the forces will act decisively and make arrests if anti-Israel demonstrators use hateful chants in public. For two years, B’nai B’rith UK has spoken with the Metropolitan Police, ministers and MPs, urging them to take forceful action against those who chant for a ‘global intifada’. This phrase is a call to arms against Jews and we saw its lethal consequences at Bondi Beach three days ago. We now hope that the police will translate words into action and that their approach is adopted by police forces throughout the UK. While we welcome any positive development in protecting the Jewish community, we will continue to exhort the authorities to take more stringent measures to reduce antisemitism. This should include enhanced security at all Jewish communal events, preventing all anti-Israel marches near synagogues and prosecutions for preachers who verbally attack Jews and Zionism.

B’nai B’rith UK is devastated to hear of the appalling slaughter at the ‘Chanukah by the Sea’ event at Bondi Beach. We understand that 12 people have been killed and we would like to wish their families a long life, as well as a speedy recovery to the injured. Our thoughts are with the Jewish community in Australia at a time when so many were celebrating a festival of light and joy. For two years, there has been a tsunami of hatred directed at Jews in Australia, as there has been around the world. The authorities must tackle this scourge of hatred and prejudice with robust measures rather than words.

Last night, well known composer, conductor and educationalist Malcolm Singer gave a presentation to friends and supporters of B’nai B’rith UK on ‘Leonard Bernstein: The Jewish works’. Singer delved into a number of Bernstein’s most famous pieces, including Kol Nidre, Jeremiah and West Side Story, showing how they were influenced by a set of Jewish rhythms and cadences. Singer also spoke about his personal meetings with Bernstein from decades earlier, recalling the composer’s complex personality and musical genius.

The largest ever contingent of B’nai B’rith UK members from across the London lodges, attended the ceremony at the Cenotaph in Whitehall on Sunday 16 November 2025.

The theme was Carry Them Forward - Marching Together. This year marked the 80 ^th anniversary of the end of the Second World War, the 80 ^th anniversary of the liberation of Bergen-Belson and the 85 ^th anniversary of the Battle of Britain.

BBUK is extremely proud that Ron Shelley MBE, of First Unity Lodge, who for many years was the Parade Commander and is AJEX Vice President. Jacques Weisser of BB Radlett is also very involved with AJEX.

AJEX has a remarkable history. It originated in 1921 when a number of Jewish veterans from the Great War laid a wreath at the newly erected Cenotaph in Whitehall. In 1934, King George V, in recognition of our contribution during WWI, and to support the fight against antisemitism, granted the privilege of marching to the Cenotaph every Sunday after Remembrance Sunday.

BBUK statement on the BBC Director General and Head of News resignations

B'nai B'rith UK notes the resignations of Director General Tim Davie and Deborah Turness, the head of BBC News, in light of the fallout from the Prescott report. The report highlights the systemic bias and agenda driven nature of much BBC journalism on many issues, including its coverage of the Middle East. It shows how BBC Arabic sought to downplay Israeli suffering after October 7 by using reporters sympathetic to Hamas and how BBC News refused to contextualise Israeli actions in the war. These damning revelations merely compound a litany of failures that have caused deep anguish for the UK Jewish community. The BBC refused to call Hamas a terror organisation, livestreamed an incendiary chant from Bob Vylan at Glastonbury and produced a documentary featuring the son of a Hamas minister. These resignations must be the start of a process in which the prevailing cultural orthodoxy on issues related to Jews, Zionism and Israel is challenged from within. Only then can the BBC regain the trust of the Jewish community, and the British public as a whole.

BBUK statement on the Aston Villa decision to ban Maccabi Tel Aviv fans

B’nai B’rith UK is appalled by the decision of Birmingham City Council's Safety Advisory Group, as recommended by the West Midlands Police, to ban the fans of Maccabi Tel Aviv from attending the November 6 Europa League match against Aston Villa in Birmingham. This has been done for on the grounds that it is ‘high risk’ and that the safety of travelling Israeli fans may be compromised.

Yet it is an egregious decision to ban or discriminate against the victims of prejudice, something that completely violates all standard protocols of anti-racism. Worse, it appears that the authorities have simply capitulated to a campaign of extremism from local figures.

Iqbal Mohamed MP, in a statement on X, welcomed the ban as it would stop “Israeli hooligans and terrorists” from being able to “run riot in our country”. In a chilling threat, Muslim imam Asrar Rashid declared in a video that, “We will show no mercy toward Maccabi Tel Aviv fans who will arrive in several weeks for the match against Aston Villa.” These words are inflammatory and represent a clear form of incitement.

If there are genuine safety concerns, the police could increase their presence or, in the worst case scenario, the match itself could be relocated. To prevent Israeli fans from travelling to the game sends out a clear message that they are not welcome in the United Kingdom.

Given the rampant levels of antisemitism we have witnessed recently, this would also further alienate British Jews, still reeling from the murderous Yom Kippur attack in Manchester on 2nd October.

It is now essential that this ban is reversed and the Chief Constable of the West Midlands Police held to account for this divisive and poorly judged decision

BBUK statement on this momentous day - 13 October 2025

B’nai B’rith UK rejoices in the return of all 20 living hostages to Israel. We have waited for this momentous day for so long and we share in the joy and relief of their families. We hope that the hostages have all the support they need to make a speedy recovery from their unspeakable ordeal.

We also share in the grief of those families that have received the remains of their loved ones and wish them long life.

We extend our thanks to President Trump for making this day come and hope that his vision for peace and co-existence comes to pass.

At the same time, we are outraged that Hamas has withheld the remains of the remaining hostages. It is now essential that the world demands their swift return in order to bring some much needed closure for their families.

BBUK welcomes the ceasefire agreement announced on 8 October

B'nai B'rith UK has welcomed the news of a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas, announced last night. We are overjoyed that the Israeli hostages will be finally coming home and reunited with their families after such a long and traumatic experience. We hope that this can lead to a longer term political agreement based on the 20 points as outlined by President Trump. This must involve the removal of Hamas as the governing authority, the disarmament of all terrorists and the creation of a transitional authority in the Strip which is committed to both deradicalistion and reconstruction. We wish to thank President Trump for his efforts in mediating this agreement and all those in the region who are working for long term peace, security and stability.

BBUK statement on the Heaton Park Synagogue attack

B’nai B’rith UK is appalled and devastated by yesterday morning’s attack on the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue that killed two people and injured others. That this appalling attack took place on the solemn day of Yom Kippur makes it all the more cowardly and reprehensible. We send our deepest condolences to the families of the victims and wish them long life, and hope the injured make a swift recovery. We also salute the bravery of the synagogue guard who helped prevent a far greater tragedy, as well as the swift response of the Greater Manchester Police. We would like to thank the King, as well as political and religious leaders for their support following the attack. We will continue to work with the authorities and other communal organisations to tackle the horrific scourge of antisemitism that has spiralled in the UK since October 7.

BBUK welcomes yesterday's historic plan

B’nai B’rith UK welcomes the historic plan announced last night by President Trump and agreed by Benjamin Netanyahu to bring the Gaza war to an end. The agreement fulfils Israel’s principal war aims. Hamas must be disarmed and removed from Gaza, all hostages must be returned and Gaza can never again be a threat to Israel. This agreement gives Israel real security and allows Palestinians enhanced aid, economic reconstruction and the chance of a better future under new leadership. Pressure must now be placed on Hamas to agree to a deal that can bring lasting benefits to Israelis and Palestinians alike.

Statement on this morning's terror attack in Jerusalem

B’nai B’rith condemns in the strongest terms the abhorrent terror attack this morning in Jerusalem which has so far claimed six lives. We send our deepest condolences to the families of the deceased and wish the injured a swift recovery. We also salute the heroism of first responders and soldiers who prevented an even greater tragedy this morning. For too long, Israel has faced the daily reality of terror attacks and the murderous incitement that accompanies them. Instead of recognising a Palestinian state that would be seen as a reward for terror, western governments should stand with Israelis in their just fight against those who wish them harm

BBUK represented at the VJ 80th Anniversary Service

BBUK's representatives were honoured to be invited to attend

Alan Miller, BBUK National President, together with his wife Edna, plus Eve and Tony Swabe representing BBUK, were honoured to have been invited to the VJ Day 80th Anniversary Service of Remembrance & Thanksgiving on Sunday, 17 August 2025 which AJEX were co-hosting with New West End Synagogue, St Petersburgh Place. Many other members of B'nai B'rith were also invited because of their links with AJEX.

VJ Day marked the official end of World War II and the service honoured the Jewish men and women who served in Southeast Asia, often under harrowing and inhumane conditions. Many continued to fight, or suffer as prisoners of war, long after Europe celebrated its victory in May 1945.

There were inspirational words from Chief Rabbi Sir Ephraim Mirvis reflecting on the enduring lessons of WWII and their urgent relevance in today’s world of turmoil. Plus speakers from the Presidents of the NWE Synagogue and the United Synagogues, as well as from members of AJEX.

In between the speeches and eulogies, the Mosaic Voices Choir sang beautifully and most movingly, with the Last Post played by a bugler from the JLGB.

Last night, Itai Reuveni, senior staff member at NGO Monitor, spoke about the war in Lebanon and offered a wider perspective on Israel’s multi front battle in the Middle East. He gave his perspective as a soldier in Lebanon tackling the threat from Hezbollah while also speaking about the information war that was plaguing Israel. Israel Emergency Appeal June 2025

Dear Members and Friends,

Each of us is aware of the terrible effects that the prolonged campaign in Gaza has had on the people of Israel, the draining effects on Israeli society and upon the economy.

Now we have seen the attacks and the retaliations between Israel and Iran with consequential death, injury and damage. Damage to residential property, to hospitals, the like of which has not been seen before in Israel. As I write this, homes are in ruins, 15,000 people have been evacuated and are living in temporary shelters; schools have been closed, public gatherings and even attendance in synagogues will only just be allowed again if today’s ceasefire holds. Siren alerts make sleep a commodity in short supply and normal life has become a challenge.

Despite this the people of Israel are showing fantastic resilience, and I know that like me, you feel that we must do all we can to support them on their road to recovery.

We have just answered an appeal from the Qiryat Gat Foundation, with whom we have a twenty-five-year relationship, and now B’nai B’rith Israel has asked us to support their Emergency Appeal.

The focus is on families who have lost their homes and possessions because of Iranian missile attacks. Their needs are immediate, and I appeal to you to rise to this challenge.

BBUK will immediately send £20,000 from the legacy we received last year.

Last night, Martin Winstone, Senior Historical Advisor to the Holocaust Educational Trust and author of two books on the Holocaust, spoke to members and supporters of B’nai B’rith UK on the subject of Holocaust distortion. He discussed how governments in eastern Europe had twisted the narrative of the Holocaust to exclude Jewish victimhood and present themselves as blameless for the atrocities committed on their soil. He also showed how some modern political campaigns involved trivialising the Holocaust by false analogies and ahistorical references. His talk offered a timely and sobering analysis of a serious contemporary problem.

BBUK expresses support for Israel following last night's attack on Iran's nuclear infrastructure

B’nai B’rith UK expresses its support for Israel following last night’s attack on Iran’s nuclear infrastructure. We have long argued that the Iranian regime poses an existential threat to Israel and to the West, considering the often stated ambition of Tehran to annihilate the Jewish state. Israel has a right to protect itself pre-emptively from this threat, ensuring that its population can live without fear.

We continue to offer our hand in friendship to the Iranian people, a very large majority of whom wish to live their lives free from the tyranny that has engulfed them since 1979.

We hope the time will soon come when ties of historic friendship can be renewed between the Israeli and Iranian people.

B’nai B’rith UK is shocked and horrified by the murder of two Israeli embassy workers in Washington DC last night. We send our deepest condolences to the families of Yaron Lischinsky and Sarah Milgrim and wish them long life at a time of enormous heartbreak. This should not be seen as an isolated act of political murder but the result of a 19 month campaign of vilification against Jews and Israelis, both in the US and around the world. Anti-Israel rallies have included calls to 'globalise the intifada' and attack Zionists in public spaces. These are not empty slogans but a call to arms and an incitement to antisemitic violence. We urge the authorities to take the strongest action against those who disseminate this incendiary rhetoric and to take all necessary measures to protect the Jewish community.

Condolences to the Catholic Community

B'nai B'rith UK would like to extend its deepest condolences to Catholic communities throughout the world, especially those in the UK, at the passing of His Holiness, Pope Francis. The Pope was a man of conviction and compassion who dedicated his life to the welfare of poor and marginalised communities. He also strove for reconciliation between people of different faiths and fostered deep and lasting ties with the Jewish community. We hope that his vision of building peace and understanding comes to pass in the Middle East and that his memory can inspire acts of compassion, tolerance and understanding.

Last night, broadcaster, journalist and author Jotam Confino spoke to members and friends of B’nai B’rith UK about the ‘new Middle East’ since October 7. He explored the multiple fronts in this conflict, especially in Gaza, Lebanon, Syria and Iran, based on his first hand reporting over the last 18 months. While explaining the various ways in which Israel’s enemies had been gravely weakened by the conflict, Jotam also discussed the internal pressures that the war had opened up within Israeli society. His talk was well attended and received by those present.

Opportunities and Challenges: a meeting with the Metropolitan Police Service

On 12 March, Pinner Synagogue jointly hosted with B'nai B'rith UK a community meeting attended by members and representatives from many synagogues and organisations in North West London & the Hertfordshire borders, with Deputy Assistant Commissioner Ade Adelekan, Deputy Assistant Commissioner Ben Russell and Superintendent Zubin Writer of the Metropolitan Police Service. They spoke about the challenges of policing in London after 7 October with a specific focus on how this had evolved. The DACs talked about the vital importance of engaging with London’s many and various communities, given the rising trends of antisemitism and Islamophobia. They clearly explained that as police their job was to enforce the law in dealing with antisemitic chanting and placards but they did not make the law. Afterwards there was an opportunity for attendees to ask questions and share concerns.

Valerie Bello awarded ‘Heritage Hero Lifetime Award’

Congratulations to Valerie Bello, recognised with the ‘Heritage Hero Lifetime Award’ by the Heritage Alliance

B’nai B’rith UK is delighted to announce that its long-time heritage activities Co-ordinator, Valerie Bello, has been recognised by the Heritage Alliance for her many years of service in promoting all aspects of heritage in the UK.

She was presented with the Heritage Alliance’s ‘Heritage Hero Lifetime Award’ at their prestigious annual Heritage Day at the historic Tower of London on Wednesday 5 ^th March, to reward over 25 years of tireless devotion to co-ordinating and promoting the charity’s heritage days, known as the European Days of Jewish Culture and Heritage (EDJCH). She is pictured left with the award, presented by Laura Carter (on the left) from Ecclesiastical Insurance who sponsored the awards and Carole Souter CBE, Chair of The Heritage Alliance.

Initiated by the B’nai B’rith Lodge in Strasbourg, the EDJCH rapidly spread across Europe and celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2024. It is organised by a partnership between B’nai B’rith Europe, the European Council of Jewish Communities and the Spanish Jewry Network and is part of the Council of Europe’s project ‘Europe - A Common Heritage’. As a result of the EDJCH, the European Route of Jewish Heritage has evolved and is now one of the major cultural routes of Europe.

B’nai B’rith UK co-ordinates a huge range of heritage activities with a different theme each year, involving synagogues and Jewish organisations across the UK, who run open days, talks, guided walks, exhibitions and heritage-related events.

The Heritage Alliance unites over 200 independent heritage organisations in England as a powerful, effective and independent advocate for heritage. The organisation values all those volunteers who work to protect England’s heritage. From caring for rural heritage sites to engaging the next generation of visitors, volunteers’ skills, passion and commitment are the backbone of the heritage sector.

The Heritage Alliance’s Heritage Day is their flagship annual event, which this year brought together heritage leaders, professionals and volunteers for a day of keynote speeches, panels, workshops and networking opportunities, all centred around the theme 'Heritage Creates' - a celebration of how heritage fosters creativity and innovation.

For over a decade, the annual Heritage Heroes Awards have celebrated the extraordinary contributions of volunteers across the UK heritage sector. More than a simple ‘thank you’, these awards are a great opportunity to demonstrate how communities can take ownership of the historic environment around them and make a real difference. With multiple award categories, the awards supported by specialist heritage insurer Ecclesiastical Insurance .

This year, the 15th annual Heritage Heroes Awards outstanding volunteers were nominated for these prestigious awards through two categories:

Heritage Heroes 2024 Award - Celebrating exceptional volunteer contributions in 2024
Heritage Hero Lifetime Award - Honouring individuals with 10+ years of dedicated service

All nominees were featured in a short film highlighting their achievements, screened during the ceremony. This is the Alliance’s way of celebrating and acknowledging the invaluable contributions of all their nominees and sharing their important work with leaders from across the heritage sector.

As a winner of a ‘Heritage Hero Lifetime Award’, Valerie Bello, who was accompanied at the event by her two sons and her daughter-in-law, was presented with a special plaque and gave a short thank you speech. Valerie also received a letter from the CEO of the Heritage Alliance, Lizzie Glithero-West, and their Chair, Carole Souter OBE, in recognition and thanks for her significant contribution to the sector.

Lizzie Glithero-West, CEO of the Heritage Alliance, said : “The Heritage Heroes Awards serve as a perennial reminder of the passion and commitment that volunteers in the heritage sector bring to heritage projects and places. From boat restoration to theatrical engagement, fundraising to community archaeology, this year has been no exception with an exceptional quality of nominees. Our panel heard inspiring stories and extraordinary feats from individuals and groups of all sizes. Our nation’s heritage story has always been intertwined with heroic voluntary effort and this continues today. Many congratulations to this year’s winners and all of those nominated for their hard work, creativity and dedication."

Valerie Bello said: “ I was thrilled to learn I had won The Heritage Alliance's 'Heritage Hero Lifetime award', as I view it also as a tribute to my organisation, B'nai B'rith UK, one of whose main projects focuses on Heritage and, in particular, to the small group of volunteers who work with me on our Heritage Committee to coordinate the annual European Days of Jewish Culture and Heritage in the UK, a series of Open Days, guided tours, walks, exhibitions, lectures and events.

"The awareness and importance of Heritage has risen dramatically in recent years both here and on the Continent. The Heritage Alliance, of which we are proud to have been members for many years, encourages the appreciation and development of Heritage in all its facets: its Focus Groups, its Special Interest Groups and its representation to Government, to mention but a few of its activities. Heritage has a significant role to play in national life - in preserving our sense of history, in the preservation of heritage sites and in increasing our knowledge of life, art and architecture in the past and its influence on the future.”

BBUK Statement on yesterday's hostage return

B’nai B’rith UK would like to express our immense sorrow at the return to Israel of the bodies of Kfir and Ariel Bibas, their mother Shiri Bibas and peace activist Oded Lifshitz. We mourn the loss of their beautiful souls and send comfort to their families at a time of deep sadness and anguish. As a community, we clung to hope that these innocents would be returned safely to their families. Now we know that they were victims of Hamas’s fathomless barbarism and cruelty. Indeed even in death, they could not be respected. Few of us will forget how their coffins were daubed with vile slogans and subjected to a ghoulish and obscene display of propaganda. The killing of these innocents reminds us that Israel’s enemies have an insatiable appetite to murder Jews. They are the enemies of their own people, not just Israelis, and they must play no role in Gaza, and beyond. We call for all remaining hostages to be released now and for the world to stand by Israel as it seeks to protect its citizens.

The Current Situation Facing Jews Worldwide and the Response of our European Organisations

On Tuesday night, Sacha Stawski, President and Editor in Chief of Honestly Concerned, gave an online talk to friends and members of B'nai B'rith UK on 'The current situation facing Jews worldwide and the response of our European organisations.' He gave a broad overview of how antisemitism had spiked around the world in the aftermath of the October 7 attacks, and of how authorities had often failed to deal with it. He also spoke about those groups who had chosen to ally with Israel and the Jewish people during this immensely difficult period, and of the advocacy events that he had organised across Germany.

BBUK Statement on Ceasefire Proposal and Hostage Release

Since 7 October, B’nai B’rith UK has campaigned for the release of all hostages held in Gaza. Reports confirm that they have been held in appalling conditions and subjected to various forms of torture and degrading ill treatment. We welcome the fact that in the ceasefire proposal just announced, some of these hostages will be released back into the arms of their loving families. It is essential that they are given the time and space to rehabilitate after what they have endured. Ultimately, all the hostages must be released. At the same time, we remain deeply concerned at the heavy price that this deal will incur, especially if it means that Hamas will survive in the long term. We must never forget the acts of unspeakable savagery that were committed on 7 October and the promise that these would be repeated if Hamas had the chance. It is essential that these terrorists are never again allowed to rule Gaza if there is to be any chance of long term peace and security.

Last night, Shadi Khalloul, founder of the Israel Christian Aramaic Association, spoke to a BBUK online audience about the history and culture of the Aramean community in Israel and his efforts to advocate for them in Israel. He highlighted the positive role that Aramean Christians have played in the modern life of the state, contradicting the claims made by the BDS movement. Shadi also spoke about the position of Christians in the Middle East and the problems they would face in light of recent geopolitical events in the region.

B’nai B’rith UK welcomes the recent ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah. It is clear that Israel’s robust campaign against the terror group has created the horizon for a political solution that allows Israeli and Lebanese citizens to return home and for the terror threat to subside in northern Israel. Many believe that this may now herald the opportunity for a wider ceasefire, allowing the Israeli hostages held by Hamas to be returned and for Gaza to be ruled by a political entity other than Hamas. B’nai B’rith UK welcomes developments that will bring security, relief, and prosperity to Israeli and Palestinian civilians after more than one year of war.

BBUK participated in the AJEX parade on 17 November 2024

Jeremy Havardi, Director of the Bureau of International Affairs, reports that he was honoured on Sunday to lead B’nai B’rith UK at the annual AJEX parade at the Cenotaph. He also attended the pre-march reception with some stirring speeches by, among others, the Chief Rabbi. The main theme of the march was ‘Standing tall’ and the march commemorated the enormous role played by Jewish servicemen to HM’s Armed Forces.

2024 is a highly significant anniversary: the 80th anniversary of the D Day landings and Monte Cassino.

Jeremy says: “But this march, like the one last year, happened under the shadow of the 7th October attacks, the ongoing wars in the Middle East and the spike in antisemitism, both in the UK and abroad. It has served as a reminder that standing tall in today’s fractured world is so vital.”

B’nai B’rith UK Statement on the Violence Towards Israelis in Amsterdam

B’nai B’rith UK is sickened and appalled by the violence directed towards Israelis in Amsterdam on Thursday night. Video footage clearly shows how Israelis were hunted down and savagely beaten by what appear to be Arabic speaking groups in the city. It has been rightly likened to a pogrom from an earlier time and we welcome the strongly worded condemnation from the King and Prime Minister of Holland.

Yet regrettably it is no surprise that it has happened. For a year, capital cities across Europe, including London, have been convulsed by anti-Israel protests, ones which have seen antisemitic tropes and incendiary language used on many occasions. It is shocking but not surprising that the result is an orgy of premeditated violence against Israelis.

We call on the Dutch authorities to ensure that such assaults cannot recur and that Israelis and Jews, along with other communities, can feel safe and welcome in Holland. We also call on the authorities in the UK to display maximum vigilance against copycat attacks against the Jewish community.

“How International Law Frames Attack Decisions in War”: 15 October Talk by Professor Geoffrey Corn

Last night, Geoffrey Corn, George R Killam, Jr., Chair of Criminal Law and Director of the Centre for Military Law and Policy at Texas Tech University School of Law, spoke to members and friends of B’nai B’rith UK on ‘How International Law Frames Attack Decisions in War”. Professor Corn spoke about the key principles of international humanitarian law and explained them within the context of the ongoing wars in Gaza and Lebanon. He gave special emphasis to notions such as necessity, distinction, proportionality and precaution, arguing that much of the media coverage of these conflicts showed a lack of understanding of core legal principles, with the consequence that they distorted any understanding of events on the ground. Feedback from the talk was very positive with many participants showing appreciation for the erudite presentation.

BBUK Bureau Statement to mark October 7

B’nai B’rith UK marks a year since October 7, 2023, that fateful day that has left a permanent scar on Israel and the entire Jewish world. We mourn the 1,200 people murdered, tortured, and abused in Israel and wish that their memories be a blessing. We stand with Israelis still mourning their loss and share their deep pain and anguish. We remain horrified by the plight of the hostages held in Gaza and demand their return to their homes. We support Israel’s legitimate efforts to defeat its enemies while acknowledging the pain this has caused to innocents in the region. The horrors of that day will not fade from our memories, but we must never lose hope that peace and goodwill can one day prevail.

B’nai B’rith UK responds to 1st October Missile Attacks

B’nai B’rith condemns the appalling wave of missile attacks by Iran against Israel today. Iran’s assault, co-ordinated with Hezbollah, has kept millions of Israelis in bomb shelters, fearful for their lives. We share the relief that very few injuries have been reported and that the defence systems have protected the population.

We call on the international community to condemn this blatant war crime by Iran and to support Israel in its ongoing battles against genocidal enemies on all its borders. We continue to share the hope of Israelis for long term peace and security in the region.
