Bureau of International Affairs held a meeting in conjunction with the Spanish Embassy

By In Advocacy, Bureau of International Affairs, News On 26 September 2023

Jeremy Havardi, Director of the Bureau, reports:

On Wednesday 20th September, Michael Alpert, Professor emeritus at the University of Westminster and a leading expert in modern Spanish history, gave a talk to BBUK members at the Instituto Cervantes on ‘Secret Judaism and the Spanish Inquisition in the final century, 1650-1750’.  He spoke about the effect of the Inquisition on those Jews who were outwardly Christian but who secretly practised the rituals of Judaism, and the trials they were put through. His blend of historical analysis with vivid case study left an indelible impression on his audience about this dark chapter in Spanish-Jewish history. The event was organised with the Spanish embassy and afterwards, Minister-Counsellor for cultural affairs, Mr Jose Robles, thanked the speaker for his presenation. Afterwards, attendees were treated to wine and canapes and had a chance to mingle with other guests.
