B’nai B’rith UK condemns in the strongest terms the recent comments made by BBC anchor Anjana Gadgil to former Israeli Prime Minister, Naftali Bennett. Discussing Israel’s targeted operations in Jenin this week, Gadgil suggested that ‘Israel was happy to kill children’ because some of the Palestinians who died were aged below 18. The notion that the IDF is deliberately killing children evokes a chilling and distorted narrative in which murderous Israeli soldiers deliberately target vulnerable civilians for their own pleasure. By contrast, Israel’s operations in Jenin have been a response to the incessant terrorism directed at its citizens over many months. In the most recent military operation, Israeli forces killed a number of wanted terrorists, arrested many others and captured much of the infrastructure used to plan violent attacks. Such offensives are sadly necessary, even though it is regrettable when they impact the lives of ordinary Palestinians. To argue that Israel targets civilians is deeply inaccurate and misinformed, and B’nai B’rith will be issuing a formal complaint to the BBC.
