B’nai B’rith UK is deeply alarmed at the US withdrawal from Afghanistan and the subsequent victory of the Taliban. As a human rights organisation, we believe that the cause of human rights, political freedom, gender equality and religious tolerance will suffer a grave set back under the new government. We are also aware of an impending humanitarian crisis as desperate people try to flee jihadist rule for a safe haven.
We welcome the announcement that the government will take in 20,000 refugees over the next 5 years but feel that this does not adequately address the needs of those in immediate danger. We call on the government to provide more help to Afghans who are fleeing persecution from the current government.
