B’nai B’rith UK wishes to condemn in the strongest terms the recent remarks of Bristol University sociologist, Professor David Miller. Miller, a long term anti-Israel activist, spoke at an online rally last weekend and declared that the ‘ideology of Zionism’ was ‘an enemy’ which needed to be ‘ended’. He condemned Zionism as a racist form of settler colonialism and spoke of Israelis trying to ‘impose their will all over the world’. The deeply conspiratorial notion that there is a global Zionist lobby controlling world governments harks back to the Protocols of the Elders of Zion, one of the most notorious anti-Semitic works in history. Worse, Miller also launched an attack on Bristol Jewish Society, leading a number of students to complain about feeling ‘unsafe and uncomfortable within their own university community’. His comments are an abuse of academic freedom, both because they badly misunderstand Zionism but also because they encourage the belief that Jewish students are part of an imagined enemy which opposes ‘progressive’ values. We call on Bristol University’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Hugh Brady, to condemn the remarks of Professor Miller and show solidarity with the Jewish society.
